If you’re looking for a simple, screen-free activity that keeps kids engaged forever – painted rocks for your outdoor play and mud kitchen ARE IT!

This has quickly become one of our most-used outdoor “toys”, and both my 2-year-old and 7-year-old are equally obsessed (but also so am I). It’s open-ended, creative, and turns into a whole world of pretend play.

Why We Love Painted Rocks

  • FREE?!
  • A perfect excuse to not buy more toys
  • Screen-free play
  • Encourages creativity and imagination
  • Fun for multiple ages
  • Perfect for spring and summer outdoor play
  • Easy to set up and reuse
  • The perfect mom craft!

These have become everything from “farmers markets” and “soup ingredients” to treasure and pretend food in our mud kitchen.

Step 1: Find Your Rocks (or Buy Them)

You can absolutely go on a nature walk, or search around in your backyard and collect your own rocks – which makes the activity even more special. I loved turning some of our son’s rock collection into food rocks!

But if you want consistently smooth, paint-ready rocks, buying them is a great option too.

If you’re not near rocks, here’s some you can buy!

Look for rocks that are:

  • Smooth and flat
  • Medium-sized (easy for little hands to hold)
  • Light-colored (paint shows up better!)

Step 2: Map Out Your Designs

Before painting, map out what foods you want to paint. It’s the perfect opportunity to get the kids involved and have them decide what they want to create.

Some fun ideas:

  • Fruits
  • Veggies
  • Bread Loaves
  • Meats

You can lightly sketch designs – or just go for it.

Step 3: Layer on Acrylic Paint

Acrylic paint works best because it:

  • Sticks well to rocks
  • Has bright, vibrant colors
  • Dries relatively quickly

Linking our favorite paints and brushes!

Start with a base layer and let it dry before adding more. This helps colors pop and prevents muddy mixing. Figure 2 layers per side!

Step 4: Let Each Layer Dry

This is the hardest part for little ones if they’re painting with you – but it makes a huge difference.

We usually:

  • Paint one layer
  • Take a snack/play break
  • Come back for details

Step 5: Add Details with Paint Pens

Once the base is dry, use paint pens for all the details!

This is where the designs really come to life – the best part for sure!

Step 6: Seal Your Rocks

To make them last outdoors, finish with a clear sealant.

Linking the best gloss.

This helps protect the paint from water, mud, and lots of little hands.

How We Use Them in Our Mud Kitchen

These rocks have completely transformed our outdoor play.

My 2-year-old loves:

  • Scooping, sorting, and “cooking”
  • Repeating simple play over and over

My 7-year-old:

  • Designs more detailed rocks
  • Creates full pretend menus and setups

They end up playing together in a way that feels natural and creative – no instructions needed.

The Perfect Spring & Summer Activity

If you’re trying to simplify play and lean into more intentional, creative time outside, this is such an easy place to start.

No batteries. No rules. Just imagination.

If you try this, I’d love to see what your kids create 🤍
